Design for Social (Good?)
How might I take a reflective approach in terms of design for social good?
Designers are hired as ‘creative problem solvers’ to enter vulnerable communities, often at times with no prior education surrounding the issue, to scrape them of all their data and ‘solve’ their problems in a few weeks. Afterwards they can move on to their next brief, regardless of the success of their solution, leaving the users alone and unspoken for again.
My unease surrounding the notion of ‘design for social good’ has prompted thoughts and questions revolving around the ethics and morals of social design and leads me to consider my own position within design.
